LESSON 1 NOTES

INTRODUCTION

WHAT IS A COMPUTER KEYBOARD?

A computer keyboard is an input device, partially modeled after the typewriter keyboard, which uses an arrangement of buttons or keys. A computer keyboard typically has characters printed on the keys and each press of a key typically corresponds to a single written symbol. However, to produce some symbols requires pressing and holding several keys simultaneously or in sequence.

Note

  • There are exist wired, wireless keyboard, and virtual laser keyboard (digital keyboard).
  • There are some keyboards without keys like the digital keyboard. In this case to produce a symbol requires pressing the symbol by the fingers.

TYPES OF COMPUTER KEYBOARD

The different types of computer keyboard that exist is due the arrangement of the keys layouts (arrangements of alphabetic, numeric, and punctuation symbols of keys). These different computer keyboard layouts arise mainly because different people need easy access to different symbols, because they are inputting text in different languages. Thus we have the QWERTY layout used by the English users and the AZERTY layout used by French users.

The name QWERTY and AZERTY are gotten from the first six (6) keys on the first row of the alphabetical keypad. The AZERTY layout differs from the QWERTY layout in that the A and Q are interchanged, the Z and W are interchanged, and the M is moved from the right of N to the right of L.

USES OF A COMPUTER KEYBOARD

  • The main use of a computer keyboard is to type text and numbers into application program.
  • Keyboards are also used for computer gaming
  • A keyboard is also used to give commands

  • Movement keys: They include the CURSOR or arrow keys (left arrow, right arrow, up arrow and down arrow), and the navigation keys (HOME, END, PAGE UP, PAGE DOWN, DELETE, and INSERT).

Figure8: Navigational keys

Figure9 : Cursor keys

  • Numeric keypad:  it is located usually on the very far right. The keys are grouped together in a block like a conventional calculator or adding machine. Numeric keyboards contain only numbers, mathematical symbols for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, a decimal point, and several function keys (e.g. End, Delete, etc.). It consist of the following types of keys:
  • Arithmetic operators such as +,-,*, /.
  • Numeric digits 0-9.
  • Cursor arrow key.
  • Navigation keys such as Home, End, PgUp, PgDown, etc.
  • Num Luck button, used to enabled or disable the numeric pad.

Numeric keypads usually operate in two modes:

  • When Num Lock is off, the keys 4,6,8,2 act like an arrow keys i.e  left arrow, right arrow, up arrow and down arrow while 7,9,3,1 act like  Home, PgUp, PgDown and End respectively.
  • When Num Lock is on, digit keys produce corresponding digits.

LESSON 3 NOTES

FUNCTIONS OF THE DIFFERENT KEYS

  1. THE FUNCTION KEYS :

These keys are also call programmable keys. They perform different function in different software programs. For example in most programs the F1 key can be press to display the HELP page .

  1. THE MODIFIER KEYS :

Modifier keys are special keys that modify the normal action of another key, when the two are pressed in combination. By themselves, modifier keys usually do nothing.

  •    The SHIFT KEY is a modifier key on a computer keyboard, used to type capital letters when press in combination with another letter keys. When the CAPS LOCK key is on the SHIFT key can be used to type lowercase letters on most systems. Press SHIFT in combination with another key to type the symbol shown on the `upper` part of that key.
  •     The ALT KEY on a computer keyboard is used to change (alternate) the function of other pressed keys when press in combination. For example, Alt+F4 in Microsoft Windows will close the program in the active window .
  •     The Alt Gr key is used to access additional symbols for keys that have three symbols printed on them. This key is found to the right of the space bar
  •   TheCTRL KEY is use in combination with another key to perform a specific task, for example, in some programs, pressing Ctrl and S will save a document.
  • Space Bar: it is used to put spaces between words and sentences.
  • Tabulation key:  it is used to ‘push’ the typing along the line in specified distances.
  1. SPECIAL KEYS
  • WINDOWS LOGO KEY It is used to quickly display the start menu when using the Windows operating system
  • ESCAPE KEY (ESC): It is use to quit the current task is running.
  • Enter Key: Used to enter commands or to move the cursor to the beginning of the next line. Sometimes labelled Return instead of Enter.
  • Backspace key: Deletes the character just to the left of the cursor (or insertion point) and moves the cursor to that position.
  • Caps Lock Key: A toggle key that, when activated, causes all alphabetic characters to be uppercase.
  • PRINT SCREEN (or PRT SCN): A long time ago, this key actually did what it says—it sent the current screen of text to your printer. Nowadays, pressing PRINT SCREEN captures an image of your entire screen (a “screen shot”) and copies it to the Clipboard in your computer’s memory. From there you can paste it (CTRL+V) into Microsoft Paint or another program and, if you want, print it from that program.

NOTE:

Press ALT+PRINT SCREEN to capture an image of just the active window, instead of the entire screen.

  • SCROLL LOCK (or SCR LK): In most programs, pressing SCROLL LOCK has no effect. In a few programs, pressing SCROLL LOCK changes the behavior of the arrow keys and the PAGE UP and PAGE DOWN keys; pressing these keys causes the document to scroll without changing the position of the cursor or selection. Your keyboard might have a light indicating whether SCROLL LOCK is on.
  • PAUSE/Break: This key is rarely used. In some older programs, pressing this key pause the program or, in combination with CTRL, it stops it from running.
  1. THE NAVIGATION KEYS

The navigation keys allow you to move the cursor, move around in documents and edit text.

  • INSERT KEY :

It turns the Insert mode on or off. When the Insert mode is on, the text that is typed is inserted at the cursor. When the Insert mode is off, the text that is typed replaces existing characters.

  • DELETE KEY :

Delete a character after the cursor or delete a selected text

  • PAGE DOWN KEY :

Move the cursor or page down one screen

  • PAGE UP KEY :

Move the cursor or page up one screen

  • CTRL+END :

Move to the bottom of a document

  • CTRL+HOME :

Move to the top of a document

  • END :

Move the cursor to the end of a line

  • HOME :

Move the cursor to the beginning of a line

  • LEFT ARROW, RIGHT ARROW, UP ARROW, or DOWN ARROW: Move the cursor or selection one space or line in the direction of the arrow, or scroll a webpage in the direction of the arrow.
  1. THE NUMERIC KEYPAD

The numeric keypad is enter numbers, and it is activated when NUM LOCK (it is a key on the numeric keypad ) is ON. Most keyboards have a light that indicates whether NUM LOCK is on or off. When NUM LOCK is off, the numeric keypad functions as a second set of navigation keys (these functions are printed on the keys next to the numerals or symbols).
